Secondary heating circuit (definition)

Secondary heating circuit — is the part of the heating system that is responsible for distributing the heat received from the primary circuit to individual areas or zones of the building. This circuit works in tandem with the primary circuit, using a heat carrier that has been preheated in the main heat source, such as a boiler or heat pump.

The secondary heating circuit is usually a heating circuit that, in relation to boiler circuit acts as a secondary one.

  1. Function:
    • Heat distribution: The secondary circuit is used to transfer and distribute heat from the primary circuit to various system elements such as radiators, convectors, heated floors or other heating devices.
    • Temperature regulation: Allows you to control the temperature in different zones or rooms, providing comfortable heating as needed.

    • Pipelines: Includes a network of pipes that connects the heating elements (radiators, underfloor heating, etc.) to the primary circuit.

    • Heat exchangers: In some systems it is used to transfer heat from the coolant in the primary circuit to the secondary circuit.

    • Receiving heat: The coolant, which has already been heated in the primary circuit, enters the secondary circuit.

  4. Difference from the primary circuit:
    • Secondary circuit: Serves to distribute already heated coolant, which comes from the primary circuit, and to control the temperature in individual zones.
    • Primary circuit: Connects the heat source to the elements that transfer heat into the system (such as heat exchangers or pumps).
