Fuel types - are pellet boilers so beneficial?

Pellet boilers in comparison with other heating equipment

Many owners of individual houses and detached industrial and commercial facilities note that pellet boilers are expensive and inaccessible. The cost in Ukraine in 2020 starts at 55,000 hryvnia. Still, wood and agro-pellets are the future and real heat without gas, which can be spent at your discretion without restrictions. All types of fuel on the market cannot compete with this energy feedstock. Ukrainians have a real opportunity to switch to heating without gas and spend very little on it.

Demonstrating savings in numbers

When energy companies show consumers the following gas figures, it can be difficult to navigate. Really wood pellets cost 2300 UAH. per ton, which is significantly higher than UAH 8.70 / m3.

Fuel Calorific value according to standard Estimated fuel price
Natural gas 8.6 kWh / m3 8.07 UAH / m3
Liquefied gas 12.8 kWh / l 11.60 UAH / l
Wood pellets 4.05 kWh / kg 4,3 UAH / kg
Agropellet (sunflower husk) 5.01 kWh / kg 1,5 UAH / kg
Electricity population 1.68 kWh

For this reason, it is important to bring to a certain dimensional value, according to which the level of expenditures is well traced. The table below shows the cost per kilowatt of heat when using different types of fuel. And even at this stage, 50% savings can be traced in comparison with the cost of main gas.

Fuel Calorific value according to standard Required amount, 1 kW * h Estimated fuel price Fuel cost per kW
Main gas 8.6 kWh / m3 0.116 m3 8.07 UAH / m3 0.936 UAH
Liquefied gas 12.8 kWh / l 0.0782 l 11.60 UAH / l UAH 0.907
Wood pellets  4.05 kWh / kg 0.247 kg 4,3 UAH / kg UAH 0.995
Agropellet (sunflower husk) 5.01 kWh / kg 0.201 kg 1,5 UAH / kg UAH 0.3
Electricity 1 kWh 1.68 kWh 1.68 UAH

In practice, the cost of agricultural pellets is even lower than the price of wood pellets. Accordingly, additional benefits can be obtained. The additional benefit is 5-10% of the original price per kilowatt. It is obtained through the use of rapidly renewable raw materials - wheat hay, sunflower husks and other agro-industrial waste.

Rational costs. Where else can you save money using any type of fuel

Regardless of which fuel you like. Rather, to which of the described options your boiler room is adapted, you can save on climate control.

The most popular "thrifty functions" are:

  • temperature regulation in accordance with temperature indicators on the street and at home;
  • using weekly heating scenarios;
  • combination of fuels depending on the benefits of use during the day ("night tariff" for electricity);
  • activation and deactivation of heating by a motion sensor using fast, basic and extra heating.

These manipulations will help you save at least 20-30% extra.

Spend indecently little on heating - make them yourself

Even for owners of individual houses, making pellets on their own can be a revolutionary way to save on heating costs. In this case, costs are minimized. And pellets become out of competition, significantly outstripping any of the types of fuel. Even expensive foreign pellet boilers can be recouped.

In every region of Ukraine, you can find wood chips and shavings. It is delivered to construction sites. But we suggest you make your own pellets. This requires a pellet press. It takes up very little space and allows itself to be provided with granular fuel for the whole winter. The cost of such equipment is quite high, the price starts from 9 thousand hryvnia. But if you are serious about your own energy security, then this is another reason to save money.

Pellet Granulator

Oak tyrsa for making pellets costs 900 UAH. per ton. In the regions, you can buy 5 tons of sawdust for UAH 1,500. Thus, the cost of a kilowatt of oak pellets will cost you UAH 0.20, which is 4 times cheaper than heating a room with natural gas. When buying hay, meal, husk seeds for processing, you will need a chopper, and the cost of a kilowatt will be no more than 0.05-0.1 UAH. None of the types of fuel can cost so little.
